I bought a Shure SM57, but still have what seems to be very "quiet" input. But I want to learn what's wrong for the future. Honestly, it's good enough to work with and learn the skills I need to learn. If I do some vocals, they sound fine (except for the background buzz and hum), but again, I feel like a mic shouldn't have to be boosted by that much just to pick up vocals. Please note the audio isn't so quiet I can't hear it. I don't know if that can mess with anything. I should add that because I don't yet have a dedicated soundcard/audio interface, I am running the mic through an XLR to 1/4 inch cable, which is plugged into a 1/4inch to 1/8inch converter which is plugged into the front of my PC. It has no trouble picking up the sound of the PC running, mind you, so there is a fair amount of feedback.

This helps, but I feel like with input maxed out and a 30db boost, I should be worried about peaking. I have an onboard soundcard (Realtek), and I've used the software it comes with to provide a 30db boost to mic input, and I've set input to 100. I browsed the web and saw this complaint all over the place, and the company seemed to provide no support, so I figured I might as well get a "real" mic. THAT said, the only mic I had was a Blue Snowball, and it had really "quiet" input. That said, I'm keeping costs down and working with what I have. I just started with Reaper (and DAWs) a week and a half ago, and at this point I'm not concerned with making pro music, just with building my skills with the software over the next few weeks, so that I can make pro music in the future.
